I stumbled upon this and yes, i do have exactly (yes exactly) the same problem

Its eczema.

Yes I know the difficulty in stretching the fingers out as he skin might tear. when clenched up, the skin is too hard and hurts. the Skin on the fingers flake off easily too.

To treat this, you first got to figure out what your skin on the fingers are allergic to. In my case, it was typical shampoos and soaps. As such, i experimented with other types of soaps and shampoos and managed to find some which i wasn't allergic to.

Also, apply cortisone creams. See a doctor about it. they can prescribe you some. these creams will clear this up very quickly and typically keep your fingers fine for like a week after you stop. but then it will come back again.

another slower method would be to use moistureisers. not the typical off the shelf ones but a much thicker lumpy sort of cream which again, your doctor should be able to provide which pretty much keep your skin relatively soft throught the day even after washes. (but not soap so don't use them)

But, your skin will never return to the way it was before this started. they'll be scarred with stretch lines and probably still make your fingerprints unacceptable for use. Won't be noticable though unless someone really focuses :D

I've been dealing with it since 15. (I'm 19 now)

hey email me if you have more questions ;)

have you tried the band aid advanced healing strips?
http://www.band-aid.com/advanced_healing_prod.shtml
the same stuff has been used in hospitals for years - it almost instantly stops the hurt and makes things heal faster with less scarring.

good luck!

Do you have athlete's foot? This can be related, as a fungal infection of the skin on the hands. Try Lamisil cream.

My husband has a similar problem. His fingertips peel and crack and bleed, particularly during the winter or when he is stressed or the weather is very dry in the summer. It sucks too as he was almost rejected from a Green Card application because they couldn't get finger prints, so try to stay clear of the legal system. But, just a little comfort...you aren't alone.
