Free Motion Quilting 2: The New Machine
Free Motion Quilting 2: The New Machine from Talia Carbis on Vimeo.
After the really, really helpful feedback I got last time from people like MrsMck and a Mom, and getting a new sewing machine that has the capacity to free-motion quilt, I decided to give it another go.
a Mom had recommended I try it WITH the batting, and backing, because it would affect the quilting. So that’s what I’ve done this time- tried to make it as clost to my actual quilt as possible. She also recommende the darning foot.
The reason it’s taken me so long to try this again, is because I knew a darning foot was pretty necessary, but there were a few other things my machine didn’t have. This was expecially apparent when I looked at A Few Scraps Quilt-a-long, and realised I couldn’t even put the feed dogs down…
So the things I’ve changed since last time:
New Machine
Darning Foot
Feed dogs down
Replicated quilt with practice fabric
Stitch length=0, stitch width=0
I think that’s all… I’d love to get some more advice from anyone who has experience with this! I’m still learning, and want to get as well practiced as possible before I start on my quilt!
Thanks for visiting my site again! keep checking back for more updates!
Felt Craft Tutorials
Have you hear of Pintrest yet? If you haven’t, then pop on over and start pinning stuff! I’m loving it for organising… everything! My username is sunshinetalia.
I’ve got boards for craft projects, clothes I want to make, each room of the house, scrapbooking and a few others!
The way it works is you pin images from websites, blogs etc. into different categories. It links back to the site you got it from, so you don’t have to worry about crediting images (it does it for you), or about remembering where you got the image from!
People can then follow certain boards, and re-pin things that they like!
Anyway, all this to say that this is my new way of collecting craft projects and inspiration. And all the tutorials I’m showing you today can be found on my craft pinboard! So without further ado, here are some great projects you can try, all using felt!
Op Shop Finds
I’m always inspired by the beautiful things Danielle always shows on her blog, and Morgan & Kim‘s recent post, I decided to go… op shopping!
I’m glad I did too, cause I came across some pretty excellent buys!

Some photo frames, a bean bag and cover (plus I will make a new cover to cover the ugliness…), glass jars, a handbag, cake knives and some boxes!
I’m going to keep that little Mona Lisa in the frame- cause it’s kinda cute, and I’ve seen the kind lady in real life now, so it’s a cool momento.
Also, that handbag- $4! I will need to give it a proper clean out, and replace the magnet to make it a bit stronger, but other then that, I think it’s a gem!

Also, I may have deviated off the path of op shopping, and stumbled into the Suncoast Sewing Centre in Nambour. I may or may not have bought THIS:

Eek! A brand new machine, and a pack of feet including a walking foot, quarter inch foot and darning foot- for free motion quilting! I’m pretty excited about it.
I had a play with it yesterday afternoon, and can I just say- it is so awesome! How I ever tried to do free motion quilting with no control over the feed dogs, and no darning foot is quite beyond me now! I’ve been saving for weeks and weeks, and knew I probably wouldn’t get it for Christmas (this is actually the next model up from the one I originally wanted- Nana convinced me that this had much better features and was worth the extra money).
The other reason I got the more expensive one was because of the scale of difference.
The difference between my old machine and the cheaper one wasn’t worth $450, but the difference between my old machine and this one IS worth $500. Does that make sense?
Have you bought anything awesome whilst out shopping lately?
