I like Colour!

I’ve finally finished the colourful iPhone cases I was making and uploaded them to the store!

Now OBVIOUSLY I am not the most professional crafter, but I do like to make stuff, and matching colours is one of my favourite things to do. I spent one night a few weeks ago (oh my, it’s probably more like a few months ago now!!) just cutting all these stips of fabric for these bags. I worked out all the colours, matched them, connected them and worked out what combinations would work best. It’s seriously my favourite part of making these cases, and when you read what happened making the rest of them, you’ll see why.

So many things went wrong.

For some reason I cut them all the wrong size (2 inches instead of 1 1/2), then I had this major brain malfunction and thought they were meant to be 1 inch, so started triming some down to 1 inch. Thankfully I stopped and looked at it again. With the 2 inch stips, I cut them down to the right side and then when I sewed them together on my new machine I used my 1/4 inch foot. Turns out when I’d made them before on my old machine my ‘guess’ 1/4 inch was more like 1/8 inch (but not exactly- argh!). So then they were too small for the iphones! So some I completley unpicked, added more pellen, and did up again, others I just added an additional strip of fabric and they’re just a bit bigger then an iPhone (not a big deal, it’s just that before they were PERFECT fits before). The rest are all just still in the box waiting for me to get over my frustrations!

But at least these three made it INTO the store. They’re $10 (plus P&H) but believe me, the cost price of these buggers has ended up being around $20 each! Not your fault of course, so I’ve kept that at the original $10!

The awesomeness which is Apple…

So the weekend has been pretty chock-a-block, but also pretty awesome. We went down to the Gold Coast on Saturday because I had an appointment booked with an apple genius for 12. The Robina shopping center is freaking huge, so we went shopping for a bit before and each bought new togs etc.

The problem I was having with my iPhone was that it wouldn’t connect to any wifi networks. I’d tried everything I could think of, and also tried all the suggestions from a friend, who is one of the people you might speak to when you call for help on your iPhone! None of his suggestions worked either, but the apple genius was very impressed that I’d tried them all. :-)

Anyway, he said it was a firmware issue, and so I would get a new phone. I knew my phone was out of warranty- but hadn’t mentioned it to the guy, so when he looked up my account he told me I couldn’t actually get it for free ’cause I had no warranty left. I had tried to extend my warranty even though it was over back when the problem first happened, but the lady said it was a no go. This guy, actually being from apple, and not from the helpdesk etc. could work around it and instead of paying $250 for my problem to be fixed, I only paid $99 and now have warranty until the next iPhone comes out (totally can’t wait for this btw!).

So that was a pretty awesome thing to have happen. The staff there were so friendly and helpful. One girl was a little bit bitchy- but she was probably just tired…

The whole store is FULL of people though- everyone just playing on the computers and iPhones and iPods around… while we were in there a guy walked out with his new purchase- a macbook and all the staff stopped what they were doing, looked at him, cheered and clapped! Lots of the customers did too! I was a bit too shocked to clap as well, but it was an awesome thing to see.

So hello new little iPhone- you’re my third one in 13 months, so hopefully you last the distance. I don’t know what it is with my, iPhones and firmware issues, but they seem to go together. :-(

How to make a Felt Phone Cover

The other day I made a few prototype phone covers for my iPhone. I’m also making one for my friend Rachel’s Samsung (I THINK it’s a samsung! All that really matters is that it’s 5 1/2 x 10 1/2 cm…!) soon. It was SO easy to make. It’s excellent for your phone because the felt is beautiful and soft- so it keeps those screens clean, and scratch free, it’s pretty, personalised, and a bit different!

I chose to embroider free-hand. Its easier on felt them trying to draw, and copy.

Your phone should fit in snuggly- no looseness, or it might fall out.

I’ve made up a project sheet, which you can download here.

I also have an etsy shop, it’s new (well, I made it a while ago- Dec 06 to be exact, but have only just gotten round to putting things in it!), and the only thing you can buy in it is this! But please specify what patterns you want on the front and back so I can make it how you want!
